Timmery Nielsen Provisional Qualifies in Hammer Throw
Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney track team placed first in 12 different events Saturday at the Doane Relays in Crete. The event was non-team scoring.
The men had nine first place finishes while senior Karen Koch (discus), junior Timmery Nielsen (hammer) and freshman Angie Sorensen (200 dash) were the women's winners. Sorensen actually tied for 1st in a time of 26.4.
Nielsen, tossing the hammer 155-8, was the only Loper on the day to provisionally qualify. She joins Megan Holmes and Amber Tiefenthaler as Lopers who've qualified in the hammer. So far this spring, seven different UNK men and seven different women have provisionally qualified in at least one event.
On the men's side, freshman Allen Burrell won the 100 (10.5) and 200 (21.8) meter dashes and also was on the winning 4 x 100 relay team (41.4). Also on that team were Garth Mins, Mike Bell and Scott Schukar. Casey Marsh (22.2) and Schukar (22.3) placed second and third in the 200 behind Burrell.
Marsh came back and won the 400 meter dash (48.7) while John Gorman (1,500/4:06.2), Mike Ford (pole vault/15-1), Clark Spanel (long jump/22-2.25), John Laux (48-5.25/triple jump) and Dave Smith (discus/155-5) also brought home the gold for UNK.
Scott Jorgensen (150-5) and Derek Frese (150-4) were right behind Smith in the discus with Laux (long jump/22-2) and Shannon Stenger (800/1:55.8) also placing second.
On the women's side, Nielsen also placed second in the shot put (40-2.50). Koch (139-11) and Leanne Fritsche (136-4) were 1-2 in the discus with Fritsche also placing third in the javelin (112-7). Senior Leah Lewis had another fine day in the jumping events as she was second in the long jump (18-5.25) and third in the triple jump (37-10.75).
In the running events, UNK was runner up four times. Placing second were Kathryn Alt (800/2:21.6), Andrea Herndon (1,500/4:58.0), Kelly Throener (5,000/18:42.0) and Torri Walford (400 hurdles/1:07.6). UNK runs in the Hastings College Invite next Friday afternoon and then a small group of Lopers goes to Iowa for the Drake Relays on Saturday.
