Lewis Provisionally Qualifies in the Long Jump
Kearney, NE — The Nebraska-Kearney track team had a total of 16 first place finishes at its own Charlie Foster Classic Saturday in Cushing Coliseum. The non-team scoring event also included Wayne State, Fort Hays State, Hastings College, Concordia and Colby C.C.
While the team got no one new to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships, senior Leah Lewis did meet the mark in the long jump. She had already qualified in the triple jump. She joins junior Jessica Reinsch as Lopers who've qualified in two events.
On the women's side, UNK placed 1-2 in six events en route to winning 10 times. Lewis (long and triple jumps), junior Lesley Liebig (high jump and 800) and freshman Laura Emmerich (mile and 3,000) each won two events. Also bringing home the gold were junior Megan Holmes (weight throw), freshman Amanda Maryott (55 dash), senior Torri Walford (55 hurdles) and the 4 x 400 relay team.
Lewis' leap of 18-5.50 in the long jump is an exactly inch better than the mark needed to qualify (18-4.50). She also had a season-best effort in the triple jump (38-6), something that will improve her standing nationally. Lewis ranked 9th in the triple coming into the weekend. Finally, the Kearney native was second to Liebig in the high jump.
Reinsch was second to Lewis in the long jump (18-3.50) and to Walford in the 55 hurdles (8.54). Walford's winning time of 8.51 is just shy of the 8.39 needed to qualify for nationals.
The men took home six first place finishes with the team placing one through three in both the 55 meter dash and the triple jump. Second place efforts by Dave Smith (weight throw) and Kurt Nielsen (shot put) were highlighted by season best throws. Both had already qualified for the NCAA's.
In the 55 dash, football players Garth Mins (6.43), Allen Burrell (6.46) and Mike Bell (6.55) were the first three to cross the line. McCook sophomore John Laux, coming off a knee injury, won the triple with an impressive leap of 47-00.50. Freshmen Nate Harms (43-10.25) and Michael Goughen (43-00.75) were next in line.
Papillion junior Brian Meade won the weight throw (57-6.50), followed by Smith (55-1.50). Smith came into the meet ranked 18th nationally in the event and his throw should move him up a few places.
Nielsen tossed the shot put 53-00.50 to place second to Concordia's Lane McDuffee (53-6.00). Nielsen ranked 8th nationally in the shot before the weekend.
Also winning on the day were Clark Spanel (long jump ) and Clint Skrdla (5,000). Derek Bailey, who is redshirting, continues to impress. He won the high jump with a leap of 6-8.00.
UNK travels to Doane College next Saturday for a meet.
