Open Season Strong
Kearney, NE – The Nebraska-Kearney track team opened its indoor season Saturday at Doane College's Ward Haylett Invitational. The event was non-team scoring.
Five different Lopers -- four men and one woman -- had NCAA provisional marks. They were Brian Meade (Papillion) and Nate Wheat (Lakin, Kan.) in the 35 lbs. weight throw, Kurt Nielsen (Grand Island) in the shot put and Mike Ford (Bertrand) in the pole vault. Jessica Reinsch (McCook), in the long jump, was the woman to qualify.
Senior Leah Lewis came with a quarter of an inch of provisional qualifying in the triple jump. Placing second, she jumped 37-18.50; the mark to make is 37-18.75. Overall, UNK had nine first place finishes.
On the men's side, the Lopers finished one through five in the weight throw, led by Meade (58-3) and Wheat (57-3.75). Wheat is a transfer from NAIA Bethany College where he was a national qualifier. The team had six of the top 11 finishers in the shot put, paced by Nielsen's winning toss of 52-1.
Heath Stukenholtz and Shannon Stenger led a strong effort in the distances. Stukenholtz won the 3,000 meter run (9:18.99) while Stenger was first in the 800 meter run (2:02.19) and third in the mile.
Thanks to three members of the football team - Mike Bell, Allen Burrell and Garth Mins- UNK was also dominant in the sprints. The Lopers went one through three in the 55 meter dash, paced by Burrell (6.48) and Bell (6.52). Mins came in a shade behind at 6.53. Burrell also won the 200 meter dash (23.07) with Mins second (23.07). Finally, in the pole vault, Ford tied for first with a leap of 15-6 while Mins was third (14-0).
Reinsch easily broke the nine-year old meet record (18-1.75) in the long jump with an effort of 18-7.50. She also was third in the 200 meter dash and fourth in the 55 meter hurdles. Timmery Nielsen helped the Lopers go one through three in the weight throw, winning the event with a toss of 49-1.25. Megan Holmes was runner up at 48-9.75. Nielsen also placed third in the shot put (41-0.50).
Kathryn Alt picked up the other UNK win by leading the pack in the 600 meter run (1:39.23). In other distance events, Lesley Liebig (400) and Kelly Johnson (800) had third place finishes.
Lewis was also third in the long jump while freshman Amanda Maryott had top five finishes in the 55 and 200 meter dashes.
UNK hosts several teams in an open next Saturday in Cushing Coliseum.
