Five Lopers Have Season-Best Efforts
Kearney, NE - The University of Nebraska-Kearney track team spent the final weekend of the regular season at two "Last Chance" meets to improve their standing on the national list. The top 16 in each event will make the NCAA Championships May 23-25 in San Angelo, Texas. The list of qualifiers will be released tomorrow.
Two throwers spent last Thursday at the Missouri Southern Twilight Invite while a big group of Lopers spent Saturday at the Emporia State Twilight meet. Improving their standing this weekend were Kearney senior Leah Lewis (long jump), Arnold junior Dave Smith (discus), Grand Island sophomore Clark Spanel (long jump) and Loomis sophomore Scott Schukar.
At ESU, Smith placed fourth in the discus with a season-best toss of 177-9. That would be the third best throw in Division II this year, going off last week's list. Two unattached throwers placed ahead of Smith as did Northwest Missouri's Clint Prange (180-3). Sophomore Derek Frese, who placed sixth Saturday (165-7), had the nation's third best throw coming into the weekend (175-7).
Besides Smith and Frese, Scott Jorgensen (10th/155-3) and Jim DeLeat (12th/154-2) also finished in the top 15 at Emporia. Head coach Andy Meyer, competing unattached, was fifth (172-4).
Spanel placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 24-3.50. That not only provisionally qualifies him in the event but also puts him around 15th in the nation.
The 4 x 100 relay team of Allen Burrell, Garth Mins, Scott Schukar and Spanel) placed first in a time of 40.91. That is just off their school record time of 40.48, set at the RMAC Championships last weekend.
Also, Burrell placed fifth in the 100 meter dash (10.60); his effort in the prelims (10.56) was four one hundredths of a second off his school record time. He and Schukar each ran a 21.33 in the 200 but didn't qualify. Burrell tied the school mark (21.29) in the event last weekend. Still, Schukar's time is around the 10th best in Division II this year. Burrell came into the weekend ranked eighth.
On the women's side, Lewis provisionally qualified in the long jump with an effort of 18-11.75. That would put her around 15th in the nation. She also was fourth in the triple jump (38-7).
Finally, junior Leanne Fritsche threw the javelin a season-best 137-1. That moves her up on the national list to around 25th.
