FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 3, 2001
Kearney, NE – University of Nebraska at Kearney head track and field coach Andy Meyer announced today three new additions to his staff.
Joining the Lopers are Karen Fink, a Doane College graduate, and Waylon Wade, a graduate of RMAC-member New Mexico Highlands. Gering native Joel Janecek, who graduated from UNK in May after a stellar career, will return to the team as a graduate assistant.
The trio joins Rich Brodersen, a former Loper track letterwinner, as assistants to Meyer.
Fink will assist Meyer in all phases of the program and lead the jumpers and sprinters. Doane's Female Athlete of the Year in 1997 and 1998, Fink, specializing in the high jump, pentathlon and heptathlon, was a seven-time NAIA All-American. She also won a national title in the high jump and earned all-conference honors as a member of Doane's volleyball team.
The past two years, Fink was a graduate assistant track coach at Central Missouri State. She trained the jumpers for both the men and women's teams and saw five of her athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships, four earning All-American honors.
Fink earned a degree in Elementary Education from Doane and a Master's degree in Physical Education from CMSU.
"Karen's presence on our staff will make an immediate impact on the success of both teams. Her familiarity with Nebraska, along with her background in several events, will be an asset to us," Meyer said.
Wade will be a graduate assistant and lead the cross country program and coach the long distance runners on the track team.
"Waylon is a very hard working individual who has a definite passion for the sport. He also has a strong sense of the RMAC from a cross country and long distance running perspective," Meyer said.
A 2000 graduate of NMHU with a B.A. degree in Human Performance in Sport, Wade had an outstanding cross country career for the Cowboys. He was a two-time NCAA Championship qualifier and was the 1997 runner-up at the RMAC Championships. Wade would also set the Highlands school mark for fastest 8k (five mile) time.
For the 2000 track season, he served as the distance coach at Robertson High School in New Mexico. He also was a personal trainer at New Mexico Sports and Wellness.
Janecek was an All-American for the Lopers in the hurdles the past two years. He was one reason the men's team won four straight RMAC indoor titles.
"Joel has been a team leader in the past and I'm looking forward to having his presence continue to play a major role in our success," Meyer said.
Brodersen will be the meet director for the program and assist Fink in coaching jumps.
"I'm excited to have Rich's strong commitment to UNK athletics carry over to track and field. He has strong event management skills and has a lot of knowledge about the long and triple jumps," Meyer said.
