Burrell Sets School Mark in 200
Kearney, NE – The Nebraska-Kearney indoor track team finished its regular season Friday night at the Prairie Wolf Invitational, held at the Devaney Center in Lincoln. UNK will host the RMAC Championships next Friday and Saturday in Cushing Coliseum.
Sophomore Casey Marsh provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400 meter dash, making him the 15th different Loper to do so this season. Marsch placed 2nd in a time of 48.50; Concordia's Mark Samuels won in a time of 47.93.
Also on the men's side, redshirt freshman Allen Burrell broke Ryan Bedlan's school record in the 200 meter dash (22.09) by running a 21.78 to place second to Nebraska's Jimmy Pino (21.48). Sophomore Scott Schukar, placing 5th (22.02), also beat Bedlan's time.
Burrell also placed second to Pino in the 60 meter dash. Burrell won the prelims with a season-best time of 6.85. In the finals, Burrell ran a 6.87 to Pino's 6.83. Sophomore Garth Mins was 3rd at 6.91.
Other highlights for the men included junior David Smith having a season-best toss in the weight throw (55-2.25). He led UNK in the event with a fourth place finish. Sophomore John Laux was 2nd in the triple jump (47-3) and 6th in the long jump (21-8.25).
On the women's side, sophomore Amber Tiefenthaler placed 4th in the weight throw with a season-best toss of 52-3.75. She was ranked 14th in the nation in the event last week. Juniors Megan Holmes (5th/51-7.75) and Timmery Nielsen (7th.49-10.50) were close behind.
Freshman Andrea Herndon was the only Loper to win on the day, placing 1st in one section of the 3,000 meter run (10:51.76). Sophomore Kathryn Alt was 3rd in the 800 meter run (2:20.65) with freshman Kelly Throener 3rd in the other 3,000 meter run (10:27.15).
Rounding out the day was senior Leah Lewis placing 5th in the triple jump (37-2.25) and junior Jessica Reinsch finishing 6th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.09).
UNK coaches also competed in the meet. Assistant Karen Fink was 2nd in the high jump (5-8.25) while head coach Andy Meyer tied for 9th in the shot put (52-2).
