Smith's Runner Up Finish Highlight of the Day
Kearney, NE - Nebraska-Kearney freshman Allen Burrell had another record setting performance tonight at the NCAA Track & Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas.
The Aurora, Colo., native ran a 21.03 in the 200 meter dash prelims, an effort that not only is a new school record but also qualifies him for the event finals tomorrow. Burrell finished third in the second of four heats and had the seventh fastest time overall. Orville Taylor of New York Tech had the best time (20.57).
Burrell tied Neil Taylor's 17-year old record in the 200 (21.29) at the RMAC Championships May 4th. Last night, Burrell broke his own record in the 100 meter dash.
Also in the 200, Loomis sophomore Scott Schukar ran a 21.40 and placed fifth in the fourth heat.
In the men's triple jump, Lexington sophomore John Laux placed 10th in a 16 person field. His leaped 49'7.25, just off his school record of 49'7.75. Terrance Woods of Abilene Christian wont the national title with a jump of 54'3.75.
In the women's triple jump, Kearney senior Leah Lewis finished a remarkable career with a ninth place finish (39-7.25). She missed All-American honors by just one place. In her career, Lewis was a three-time indoor All-American in the triple jump.
LaTasha Mosley of Angelo State won the national title with a jump of 42-3.50.
Earlier today, Arnold junior Dave Smith placed second in the discus with a school record toss of 182-7. He is just the third Loper to place in the top two in an NCAA meet (indoors or outdoors).
Also, Grand Island sophomore Scott Jorgensen placed 11th (165-11) and Bancroft sophomore Derek Frese was 14th (158-7) in the16-man field.
