Men's Track Shooting for
5th Straight Title

Lopers Host RMAC Championships This Weekend

Kearney, NE — The Nebraska-Kearney men's indoor track team will be going for an unprecedented fifth straight league title this Friday and Saturday at the RMAC Championships, held in Cushing Coliseum.

The two-day event begins tomorrow night at 5:00 p.m. and will conclude Saturday around 2:30 p.m. A total of seven schools in the RMAC sponsor men's and women's indoor track.

Head coach Andy Meyer says things will be close between the Lopers and distance running powers Adams State and Western State. Hopefully not as close as two years ago when the meet was last held in Kearney. The team champion was decided by the last event of the meet, the 4 X 400 relay. UNK placed first, Western fourth, making the Lopers (131 points) the champion over the Mountaineers (130) by a single point. Currently, the Lopers have the league's best marks in three events -- shot put (Nate Wheat, Jr. Lakin, Kan), triple jump (John Laux, So., Lexington) and pole vault (Mike Ford, So., Bertrand) -- and rank second in three others. Last year, UNK tallied 144 points with Adams second (94).

The Loper women have been runner up the past two seasons, to Adams in 2000 and to Western last year. Adams had won eight straight league titles before Western's victory last season.

UNK has the best marks in five events; triple jump (Leah Lewis, Sr., Kearney), 60 meter high hurdles (Jessica Reinsch, Jr., Geneva), shot put (Timmery Nielsen, jr., St. Paul), weight throw (Megan Holmes, Jr., Scottsbluff) and pole vault (Laura Ford, Fr., Bertrand). Due to a shoulder injury, Ford will not be competing.
