Three Lopers Finish 9th

Kearney, Neb. – Grand Island senior Scott Jorgensen led the Nebraska-Kearney track team on the second day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in Walnut, Calif.

For the first time in his career, Jorgensen earned All-American honors as he placed sixth in the discus with a toss of 169-6. The effort came on his third attempt.

John Schulte of Ashland (Ohio) was national champ thanks to a heave of 179-7.

Also for UNK in the event, Walthill junior Derek Frese placed ninth (167-1), one spot shy of All-American honors. The eighth place finisher had a top throw of 167-10.

Seniors Derek Bailey (Ansley) and Clark Spanel (Grand Island) also came up one spot short in their quest for All-American glory. Bailey was ninth in the high jump (6-9.75) while Spanel was ninth in the long jump (23-8).

Bailey also failed to qualify for the finals in the 110 hurdles as he ran a 14.66, the 12th fastest time overall and the fifth best effort in the third heat.

After qualifying for the 400-meter finals yesterday, Bellwood junior Kate Semin ran in the 200 prelims this evening. She didn’t repeat her Thursday performance as she ran a 24.82 today to place 21st overall. She was fourth in the first heat.

Finally, Kearney senior Lisa Calleroz placed 14th in the discus with a top toss of 132-7. Cecilia Barns of Cal State Bakersfield won the national title with a throw of 168-10.
