Track Earns Academic HonorsWomen’s Team among the Brightest in the Nation Kearney, NE – The Nebraska-Kearney track teams were recently honored by the United States Track Coaches Association for outstanding academics during the 2002-03 year. The Loper women’s team had the 10th highest cumulative GPA in Division II at 3.34 while eight individuals – six women and two men -- made the Division II individual All-Academic team. UNK had its usually strong year in 2003, the men winning their seventh straight RMAC indoor title and the women defending their outdoor RMAC crown. The blue and gold also had six different individuals earn All-American honors. For the men, departed senior thrower Dave Smith (Arnold) and current senior thrower Scott Jorgensen (Grand Island) made the individual team. Smith, a 2003 All-American in the discus, had a 3.35 GPA as a construction management major while Jorgensen has a 3.35 GPA in Social Sciences. On the women’s side, departed seniors Stephanie Schneider (Funk; 3.90 in Interior Design), Jessica Reinsch (Geneva; 3.85 in Psychology) and Leann Fritsche (Maywood; 3.39 in Political Science) made the individual team with Schneider getting the nod in cross country as well. Also on the team are current senior Megan Holmes (Minatare; 3.25 in Exercise Science), junior Kate Semin (Bellwood; 3.53 in Exercise Science) and junior Amber Tiefenthaler (Butte; 3.44 in Elementary Education). These women were among the Lopers best last year. Reinsch (60 meter hurdles) and Tiefenthaler (weight throw) earned All-American honors during the indoor season while Holmes (indoor and outdoor) and Schneider (outdoor) were NCAA qualifiers. At the RMAC Outdoor Championships, Semin was the triple jump champion and Fritsche runner up in the javelin.
