Frese Sets Hammer Record at DoaneLopers at Crete, Lawrence Saturday Kearney, Neb. – After getting close in the last two meets, Walthill senior Derek Frese finally broke the school record in the hammer throw Saturday at the Doane Relays in Crete. Frese had tosses of 179-5 and 179-7 in the past week to get close to Brett Wetton's record of 179-11. He finally passed that 2001 record when he went 180-3 to place second in a field of over 20 competitors. Nebraska's Issar Yazhbin won the event with an impressive toss of 193-5. Frese's day wasn't done as he would also place first in the discus, tossing it 162-8. UNK had nine other top three finishes at the meet. On the men's side, York freshman Darrel Branz was runner up in the 400 hurdles (56.95) while Norfolk senior Ryan Brown (200/22.52) and Fremont freshman Seth Yount (long jump/21-7.25) were third in their respective events. For the women, Butte senior Amber Tiefenthaler (hammer/166-6), Springfield senior Denise Kolar (400 hurdles/1:04.75) and Wayne senior Amanda Maryott (100/12.60) had second place finishes. Maryott actually had the fastest time in the prelims of the 100 (12.56). Placing third was Kearney senior Christy Perry in the pole vault (11-1), Kearney junior Erin Riedel in the 3,000 steeplechase (12:05.54) and Central City junior Shauna Birchard in the shot put (season-high 48-7). At the Kansas Relays, Hooper junior Cali Cordes tied for 12th in the pole vault (10-11.75), Culbertson sophomore Sara Wagner finished 14th in the triple jump (38-1.750 and Grand Island freshman Lea Schneider was 20th in the prelims of the 100 hurdles (15.76). UNK competes at the Nebraska Wesleyan Open next Friday with a few team members heading to the Drake Relays next weekend. |
