Melissa Garcia is in her first year with the Lopers as a graduate assistant coach. She was hired by Russell this fall.
A native of Thornton, Colo., Garcia recently finished a stellar career at the University of Denver. A four-year letterwinner and a five-year member of the Pioneers, Garcia helped DU move from Division II to Division I during her career. DU made the NCAA Division I Tournament in 2001 and qualified for the WNIT last winter.
Playing both point and two guard, she ended her career as the Pioneers leader in steals (261) and three pointers made (227). She also is ninth on the career scoring list (1,274) and sixth in career assists (338). This past season, she was named the team's Co-MVP and also was the Pioneers' Defensive MVP.
She graduated from DU in June with a degree in Communication.
