Kearney, NE —Erin
Jones, a 5'10" guard/forward from Lexington High School, and Taryn
Ninemire, a 5'9" guard from Sandy Creek High School, have signed
a national letters of intent to play basketball at the University of
Nebraska at Kearney, it was announced today by head coach Amy Stephens.
"We're extremely pleased to have back-to-back all-Nebraska recruiting classes," Stephens said.
"Erin and Taryn are the epitome
of the kind of student-athlete we want in our program. Both excel in the
classroom and on the basketball court."
Playing for a program that has won
the past five Class C-2 state titles and is on an 87 game winning streak,
Ninemire is one of the top players in the state. As a junior, she earned
second-team All-Superstate honors from the Lincoln Journal Star
after averaging 21.2 points and four rebounds per game. First-team
All-Class C 2 as a sophomore and junior, Ninemire was captain of the 1999
all-state team. She made 11 threes at the 1999 state tournament, setting a
Class C 2 record, and has already scored over 1,000 points in her career.
Ninemire has been a part of the Daubert/Pinnacle Junior team that past
three years. Ninemire also is a two-time qualifier at the state track meet
and is a two-time first-team all-conference choice in volleyball. Ninemire
picked UNK over Division I Creighton.
"Taryn will be a force to
contend with and will have a major impact towards our continued
success," Stephens said.
Jones, an all-around athlete who has
already earned nine letters in three different sports — basketball,
track and volleyball - has been Lexington’s leading scorer the past two
seasons. Lexington has made the Class B State Tournament the past two
years, including a semi-final finish last year. As a junior, Jones
averaged 14.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game in leading LHS to a 16-5
record. Subsequently, she was named the KNOP-TV Area Female Player of the
Year. Jones also earned honorable mention all-state honors as a sophomore
and junior.
In volleyball, Jones has led her
team to two state tournaments while earning all-state honors three times.
On the track, she has qualified for the state track championships in four
different events the past three years. She placed fourth in the high jump
in 1999.
"Erin's athleticism will bring
a new dimension to our outside game," Stephens said. "
The UNK women are one of just eight
NCAA Division II teams to have made the NCAA Tournament in each of the
past five seasons. The Lopers have also won four of the last five RMAC
titles and have averaged 25 wins a year since Stephens took over in 1994.
