FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 9, 2001
Kearney, NE – The 24th-ranked University of Nebraska at Kearney men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 13 games with a 101-46 pasting of Colorado Christian Friday night in Lakewood, Colo. The 5th-ranked UNK women's basketball team wasn't as fortunate as the Lopers fell 70-67 in overtime. It was the first loss by a UNK women's team to CCU in 12 games.
In the late contest, the Loper men had little trouble with a Cougar team that is now 1-20 on the season. UNK played its starting lineup for only around 20 minutes and all 11 Lopers who played scored.
Anthony Harms led the way with 14 while the Loper bench provided 56 points. Mike Gitt (13), Tanner Engel (12) and Jason Brown (10) all scored in double figures coming off the bench. Senior John Webber (12 points, four assists) was the other player in double figures.
UNK shot 55 percent from the field while holding CCU to just 301 percent. The Lopers also dominated the boards, holding a 51-27 edge.
For the third straight game, the UNK women failed to break 70 points and, like the past two games, were trailing at intermission.
However, the Lopers led for most of the second half and were ahead 60-55 with a little over two minutes remaining. CCU tied the game at 60 all with 1:36 remaining on a three pointer by Tina Redmond. The RMAC's leading scorer, Redmond again torched UNK, finishing with 32 points on 10 of 18 shooting. Earlier this year, she had 33 points against the Lopers.
Becky Schroeder put UNK ahead with 37 seconds left on a short jumper but two free throws by Redmond sent the game into OT. Allison Kruger missed a shot at the buzzer that would've won the game.
Redmond tallied the first two points of the extra session on two more free shots. Schroeder tied the game at 64 with 3:33 left. CCU scored the game's next four points before Beth Swift hit a trey to cut the Cougar lead to one with 10 seconds left. After Redmond made two free shots, a Swift three misfired at the buzzer.
Swift led UNK with 19 points on seven of 17 shooting. Schroeder had 16 and Mamissa Mwenentanda had 18 points and seven boards off the bench. Schroeder, who moved into 10th place on the UNK career scoring and rebounding lists after last week's games, now has 961 points and 584 rebounds in her career.
UNK is at Regis Saturday night. The men play at 6:30 p.m. CST with the women tipping off around 8:30 p.m.
