FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 17, 2001
Women
use big second half to roll;
Men fall just short of school record
Kearney, NE — The 22nd-ranked
University of Nebraska at Kearney men's put together a late run, but fell
just short in a 104-92 loss at Metro State Saturday night. The 8th-ranked
UNK women used a big second half to down Metro State, 74-53.
In the first game, the Loper women
(22-2, 15-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) started off slowly, and
led the Roadrunners (9-15, 7-10 RMAC) by only four at halftime 33-29.
However, UNK went on a 15-0, six minute and 11 second run midway through
the second half and cruised to the 21-point win.
With the win, the Loper women have
guaranteed themselves at least a tie for the best record in the RMAC, and
can secure a No. 1 seed in the RMAC tournament with just one more
conference win.
The Lopers were led by junior Beth
Swift (LeMars, Iowa), who drained four three-point baskets to lead all
scorers with 19 points.
Senior Becky Schroeder (Belden) had
13 points and now has 999 points in her career, which is ninth on UNK's
all-time scoring list. Junior Mamissa Mwenentanda (Lubumbashi, Congo) had
another big game, as she chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds.
Also in double figures for the
Lopers was junior Anny Burdorf (Emmetsburg, Iowa), who had 10.
In the nightcap, the Loper men
(18-5, 13-4 RMAC) cut a late 18-point Roadrunner (17-6, 12-5 RMAC) lead to
eight, but fell short of downing the defending national champions.
With the loss, UNK needs just a
split of this week's games to host a first round RMAC tournament game.
Should UNK win both games, they would guarantee themselves a No. 3 seed in
the tournament.
The Lopers were led by sophomore
Nick Svehla (Omaha), who had 21 points and was seven of eight from the
free throw line.
Sophomore Tanner Engel (Kearney),
drained five three-point baskets in the first half and ended the game with
16.
Freshman Nick Branting (North
Platte) and senior John Webber (Mt. Vernon, Ohio), also scored in double
figures as they scored 12 and 10 respectively.
The Loper men and women will close
out their regular season with home games Wednesday and Thursday night.
Chadron State will be in the Health and Sports Center Thursday night.
Tipoffs against the Eagles are at 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the
men. Colorado Mines will visit Thursday night. Tipoff times for the
Lopers/Orediggers games will be at 5 p.m. for the women and 7 p.m. for the
men.
The Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference tournament will open at home sites on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
