Come From Behind to Down New
Mexico Highlands; Streak at 77
Kearney, NE — The
University of Nebraska at Kearney's women's basketball used a 15-0 run in
the final 3:36 of the first half to come from behind to down Rocky
Mountain Athletic Conference opponent New Mexico Highlands, 86-79 Monday
night in the Health and Sports Center.
With the win, the 10th-ranked
Lopers (9-0, 4-0 RMAC) ran their home court winning streak to 77 games.
The streak dates back to 1995 and is the longest current home-court
winning streak in the nation.
UNK got their first lead of the game
with 13:50 left in the first half when a pair of free throws put the
Lopers up 9-8. The Cowgirls (3-5, 1-2 RMAC) then connected on three
straight three pointers to put them up by nine at 17-9.
The Lopers then battled with New
Mexico Highlands and didn't take the lead until 1:37 left in the half,
when a jumper put them up by two at 35-33. UNK would never trail again,
but never shook off the Highlands' attack. The Cowgirls closed the Loper
lead to four points at 78-74 with just 2:49 left in the contest.
The Lopers were led by sophomore Allison
Kruger (Paulina, Iowa), who poured in 20 points and had six rebounds.
In a balanced night in scoring, the
Lopers got at least 12 points from all five starters. Junior Beth Swift
(LeMars, Iowa), and senior Becky Schroeder (Belden) each had 17.
Junior Anny Burdorf (Emmetsburg, Iowa) had 13, while junior Mamissa
Mwenentanda (Lubumbashi, Congo) had 12.
The Cowgirls were led by Jenny
Garcia who had a game-high 28 points. Becky Gonzales had 24, while Angelic
Trujillo had 20.
The game was plagued by miscues. The
two teams combined for 56 fouls, saw five players foul out, shot 65 free
throws and committed 38 turnovers.
The Lopers travel to Morningside
Thursday night before returning home to play in-state Nebraska Wesleyan
Sunday night, December 30. The start time of that game has been moved from
6 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the game will be played in the Health and Sports
Center.
