Women's Basketball Wins
Season-Opening Tournament

Swift Named Tournament's Most Valuable Player

Kearney, NE — The University of Nebraska at Kearney's women's basketball season started the 2000-2001 season in style with a championship in the Pepsi Tip-Off Tournament at Mankato, Minn. Friday and Saturday.

UNK claimed the championship Saturday night with a 76-67 win over the host Minnesota State-Mankato. The Lopers advanced to the championship with a 114-35 win over St. Mary's Friday night.

UNK was led Saturday night by junior Beth Swift (LeMars, Iowa), who had a game-high 25 points. She was 6 for 9 from the floor, 3 for 4 from the three-point line and 10 for 13 from the charity stripe. Swift was named the Most Valuable Player and named the tourney's top scorer with 43 points.

UNK junior Anny Burdorf (Emmetsburg, Iowa) was named the tourney's assists leader with 12. She had five Saturday night against Minnesota State-Mankato.

Junior Allison Kruger (Paulina, Iowa) tallied some 19 points for the Lopers Saturday night.

Mankato was led by Kris Neuberger, who had 14 points.

The Lopers will open up the 2000 home season Friday and Saturday as they host the Thanksgiving Tournament. UNK will play Texas Women's at 5 p.m. Friday, while Missouri Western will play Northern State at 3 p.m. The consolation match will be played Saturday at 3 p.m., while the championship will start at 5 p.m. All matches will be played in the Health and Sports Center.
