FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 24, 2000
Lopers
Advance to Face No. 25 Missouri Western State
Kearney, NE —
The 15th-ranked University of Nebraska at Kearney women's
basketball team had five players score in double figures, led by junior
center Becky Schroeder's career-high 24 points, to defeat the Texas
Woman's University Pioneers, 90-56, Friday afternoon in the UNK
Thanksgiving Tournament.
UNK improves to 3-0 while TWU falls to 0-3. The Lopers will face 25th-ranked
Missouri Western State tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. in the championship game of
the tournament. The Golden Griffons (3-0) rallied, in overtime, to defeat
Northern State, 81-76, in the early game. TWU and Northern (0-4) will play
tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
UNK, down 4-0 to begin the game, went on a 12-2 run to make it 12-6
and would never lead by less than five points the rest of the way.
Schroeder tallied only two points in the first 10 minutes of the game but,
by halftime, had scored 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field. Her
previous career best scoring effort was 23, set last February in a home
win over Fort Hays State. Junior point guard Beth Swift hit her
first four three pointers she took and scored 16 of her 18 points by
intermission. TWU shot just 26 percent in the first half and trailed UNK,
46-16
The Lopers' lead never got below 23 after halftime. Sophomore
forward Allison Kruger managed nine points and seven rebounds in
the game's final 20 minutes to finish with her second straight
double-double (12 and 10). UNK had 21 offensive rebounds and out boarded
the Pioneers by ten.
This was head coach Amy Stephens 150th career
victory as leader of the Lopers. In her seventh season, she now has a
career mark of 150-33, and needs five more wins to become the winningest
coach in school history. Dan Wurtz won 154 games over an 11-year span
(1982-93). This was also UNK's 73rd straight win at home,
dating back to 1995.
