Men
Win 18th Straight in Kearney
Kearney, NE – The wins just keep coming for the University of Nebraska at Kearney basketball teams. To end the regular season Thursday night, both Loper squads downed the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers with ease. The 7th-ranked women pounded Mines 83-30 while the men were just as impressive, winning the nightcap 107-75.
For the women (24-2, 17-2 RMAC), the victory puts them into the NCAA record book. It was their 85ths straight home court win, tying the NCAA Division II mark, held by West Texas A & M (1987-91).
"We would like to own the record ourselves," head coach Amy Stephens said. "Since the game Tuesday will be in the RMAC Tournament, it should help us focus. We have to win that game for our season to continue."
The Lopers, who will play at home Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m., will be the No. 1 seed in the eight-team RMAC Tournament. Their opponent will be announced Saturday night or Sunday morning.
Tonight, UNK forced 29 Mines turnovers and shot 57.6 percent in a 53-point win. The Orediggers best player, 6-5 center Kim Good, played only three minutes after suffering a right knee injury. On the year, she averages 13.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game.
Without their star, Mines couldn't muster anything offensively, shooting just 26.5 percent. No player scored more than eight points.
Becky Schroeder and Allison Kruger each scored 16 points for the Lopers while Anny Burdorf (11) and Mamissa Mwenentanda (13 points, 11 rebounds) were again strong off the bench.
The Loper men (20-5, 15-4 RMAC) remained perfect at home for the 2000-01 season (14-0) by shooting 57.5 percent from the floor. UNK will be the No. 3 seed in the RMAC Tournament and play Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m.
UNK went on a 17-2 run with eight minutes left in the first half to turn a three-point lead into a 48-29 lead. Mines never recovered and trailed by 20 points the rest of the night.
Sophomore forward Mike Gitt (Valley) came off the bench to lead UNK with 23 points. He hit his first nine shots from the field and tallied his 23 points in just 18 minutes.
Omaha sophomore Nick Svehla had a stellar effort, scoring 14 points, grabbing seven rebounds, handing out seven assists and stealing two balls.
Kez Kennedy and Farris Broussard led Mines with 18 points a piece.
