Women
Use Big Second Half; Men Break 100 Again
Kearney, NE — The University of Nebraska at Kearney basketball teams picked up two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road wins against Western State Thursday night in Gunnison, Colo.
The 7th-ranked Loper women (12-0, 5-0 RMAC) started the night off with a 77-61 win over Western State. The win wasn't easy for the Lopers, as they led by only four at halftime, 36-32.
UNK junior Beth Swift (LeMars, Iowa) used four straight three-point baskets in the second half to break UNK's school record for three-pointers in a career. Swift now has 121 three-point baskets (Kara Grahm, 117, 1996-99). The three-pointers were part of 22 second half points for Swift, and she led the Loper attack with 28 points.
Senior forward Becky Schroeder had 20, while sophomore wing player Allison Kruger (Paullina, Iowa) had 11 on five of seven shooting from the field. UNK, the top shooting team in the nation, again was solid from the field, making 55.4 percent of its field goal attempts.
The Loper men (6-3, 3-2 RMAC), for the first time since the 1997-98 season, scored 100 points or more in three straight games with a 105-95 win over the Mountaineers. The win was the first road victory for the Lopers this season.
UNK trailed at halftime by a point, 48-47, as Western made 20 of its first 29 shots (69.0 percent). The Lopers stepped up the defensive pressure in the first 10 minutes of the second half and soared to an 84-66 lead with around nine minutes to go. But, Western tallied the game's next 10 points and kept within striking distance until the final seconds.
UNK had six players in double figures and got 55 points from its bench. Senior guard John Webber was one of those reserves and had his best game of the year, finishing with 26 points. He was five of eight from the three-point line.
Sophomore Nick Svehla had a big night for the Lopers as well, as he tallied 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Fellow sophomore forward Mike Gitt came off the bench to register a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Chad Sheffield scored a season-high 10 points, on four of five shooting, was the other reserve to light up the scoreboard.
Both Loper teams continue RMAC road play Friday night as they play at Mesa State in Grand Junction, Colo. The Loper women play at 7 p.m., while the men tip-off at 9 p.m. Both contests will be webcast on the world wide web at http://www.lopers.com.
