Basketball Teams
Spilt at Chadron

Women's Streak Ends; Men Survive Eagles

Kearney, NE – As expected, Thursday night's basketball games between the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Chadron State were extremely close. At Chadron, the UNK men lost a 23-point second half lead but hung on for an 82-78 victory, extending their winning streak to 11 games. The 2nd-ranked Loper women weren't as fortunate as they lost for the first time this season, 64-53.

In the men's contest, UNK (14-3, 10-2 RMAC) got out to a 40-30 halftime lead and began the second half on a tear. The Lopers outscored the Eagles 15-2 in the first four minutes to lead 55-32 with 16:55 to play. That's when Chadron perimeter game starting to kick in and the Loper offense went south.

CSC freshman Jeremy Wissing (27 points, four treys) tallied nine straight points to begin the comeback. After a Nick Svehla layup, the Eagles scored the game's next 12 points to make it just 57-53 UNK. Wissing ended the Eagle run with a three; Chadron would go eight for 15 from behind the arc in the second half.

The game was a see saw affair from that point on with UNK actually trailing by four points, 71-67, with 2:51 to play. After Chadron's final three tied the game at 77 all with 45 seconds left, Svehla hit a jumper to put UNK up for good. Nate Mohs hit three of four free-throw attempts to seal the win. With eight seconds remaining, Mohs' tracked down his missed free throw and got fouled, sending him back to the line.

Anthony Harms had a season-high 26 points on seven of 16 shooting. He now as made at least one three in 42 straight games, dating back to December of 1999. Svehla added 19, Mohs 11 and Jason Brown (six points, four rebounds) was strong off the bench.

Chadron (5-13, 4-8 RMAC) was led by Wissing and Tim Kamerzell (12 points).

For the UNK women (18-1, 11-1 RMAC), the story was an extremely poor shooting night. The Lopers lead the RMAC and rank third in the nation, in field goal percentage (49.3). In addition, UNK averages a healthy 81.1 points per game.

Against the Eagles, the Lopers shot just 28.6 percent (17 of 60) from the field and were just 2 of 16 (12.5 percent) from the three point line. The 53 points are the fewest scored in the Amy Stephens era and the least since the Lopers tallied 53 in a 1994 game at Wayne State.

Despite all that, UNK trailed by just two points, 53-51, at the 4:51 mark. An Allison Kruger (nine points, team-high 11 rebounds) layup cut the Chadron lead to two with 2:51 left. However, the Lopers wouldn't score again as they went 0-5 from the field and had three turnovers in the final three minutes.

Senior Becky Schroeder was the only Loper in double figures (20) as she made seven of her 13 field goal attempts. The rest of UNK squad was a combined 10 for 47 (21 percent) from the floor. Schroeder also had 10 rebounds, making this her second double double of the year.

Three Eagles (14-5, 9-3 RMAC) were in double digits, led by Melissa Burker (15 points). Chadron wasn't hot from the floor either, making just 32 percent of their shots.

After taking Friday off, the Lopers visit Colorado Mines Saturday afternoon. The Oredigger men fell to Hays, 86-69, Thursday while the Mines women beat the Tigers, 73-31. In that contest, 6-5 center Kim Good had 31 points, 18 rebounds and nine blocks.
