Use Big Second Half to Keep Streak Alive
Kearney, NE — The
University of Nebraska at Kearney women's basketball team used a 20-5 run
over the first eight and a half minutes of the second half to down Rocky
Mountain Athletic Conference opponent Adams State, 71-55, Saturday night
in the Health and Sports Center.
With the win, the 6th-ranked
Lopers ran their home-court-winning streak to 79 games. The streak dates
back to 1995 and is the longest current home-court-winning streak in the
nation.
UNK improved their record to 14-0
and 7-0 in the RMAC. Adams State fell to 4-7 and 1-6 in the league.
The Lopers started off slowly, as
Adams State took a 9-4 lead with 13:45 left in the first half. UNK then
took the lead with 10:57 left in the first half and never gave up the lead
again. The Lopers, however, couldn't put the Grizzlies away as they led by
just four at halftime 30-26.
UNK had three players in double
figures as senior Becky Schroeder (Belden) and sophomore Allison
Kruger (Paulina, Iowa), each tallied 15 and junior Beth Swift (LeMars,
Iowa) had 14.
Junior Mamissa Mwenentanda (Lubumbashi,
Congo) did not play in the game due to personal reasons.
The Grizzlies played the rebound
game well in the first half, out-boarding the Lopers 26-9, including 10
offensive rebounds. However, the Grizzlies had problems controlling the
ball, as they turned the ball over 32 times in the game.
Adams State was led by Shannon Meece,
who had 20 points, and Sarah Poole, who had 14.
The Lopers will continue home Rocky
Mountain Athletic Conference play next weekend, as they host Colorado
Christian Friday night and Regis Saturday night. Both games start at 6
p.m. in the Health and Sports Center.
