Women's Basketball Falls to Colorado in Exhibition Game

Kearney, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Kearney women's basketball team began its 2000-01 season with an exhibition game at Division I Colorado Thursday night in Boulder, Colorado. The Lopers are taking advantage of a new rule that allows Division I schools to play Division II or III schools in exhibition games.

UNK would fall 82-46 to the much taller Buffaloes. CU had seven players over 6'0" with five being over 6'2". The Lopers were without their two tallest players in junior Mamissa Mwenentanda (6'5") and freshman Melany Lange (6'2"). Lange is out with injury while Mwenentanda will be eligible to play in late December.

UNK got off to a slow start, trailing 22-2 after seven minutes. The Lopers scored their first basket at the 13:21 mark and shot 39 percent in the first frame. Meanwhile, CU was hot, make 4 percent of their field goals, including three of their first six three pointers, in the first 15 minutes. The Lopers hung with the Buffs on the boards (19-10) and in the turnover race (12-9). CU led 47-22 at intermission.

Things went much better in the second half as UNK was outscored only 35-24. UNK managed to force another 15 turnovers, pushing CU's miscues to 24 for the game. As expected, the bigger Buffaloes had a huge advantage at the free throw line where they attempted 23 shots, making 20 of them. The Lopers made nine of 12 free throws. UNK lost the rebounding war, 36-22, but by a respectable margin.

Senior center Becky Schroeder had several nice offensive moves and ended the night with 14 points and four rebounds. Junior guard Beth Swift, UNK's leading scorer last year, ended with nine points, five rebounds and two assists. Freshmen Heather Steffen and Dawn Schreiber combined to score 10 points and grab three rebounds in 37 minutes of work.

The Lopers begin the regular season at the Minnesota State Tournament in two weeks.
