Basketball Splits at
Fort Hays State

Women win first in five years
Men fall just short of school record, repeat upset

Kearney, NE — The 22nd-ranked University of Nebraska at Kearney men's basketball had its 14 game winning streak snapped with a 74-68 loss at 18th-ranked Fort Hays State Tuesday night. The 8th-ranked Loper women snapped a four game losing streak at Hays, Kan. with an 86-74 win over the Tigers.

In the nightcap, the Loper men (17-4, 13-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) battled back from a 37-29 halftime deficit to take a five-point lead halfway through the second half. Fort Hays State (20-3, 15-1 RMAC) then took a lead with about six minutes remaining and the two teams battled back and forth for the rest of the game. The two teams were tied 68-68 with 48 seconds left in the game, but the Lopers would not score again, while the Tigers canned six free throws.

With the loss, UNK had its 14 game winning streak snapped. The streak was just one short of the school record of 15 straight (1979-80 season). UNK also saw it's eight game winning streak against Fort Hays State snapped. That streak dated back to the 1997-98 season.

The Lopers were led by sophomore Nick Svehla (Omaha), who had 18 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Anthony Harms (Filley) had 17 points, while senior John Webber (Mt. Vernon, Ohio) had 11.

The two teams shot poorly through the entire game. UNK shot only 36 percent for the game. The Tigers shot just 35 percent for the game and just 23 percent in the second half. The difference was at the free-throw line, where Fort Hays State nailed 28 of 37, while the Lopers made 13 of 18.

Fort Hays State was led by Tony Thomas' 18 points and 20 rebounds.

In the first game, the Loper women (21-2, 14-2 RMAC) shot 57 percent from the field to secure their first win in five years at Hays. The last time the UNK women had won at Fort Hays State was in the 1995-96 season.

UNK, behind 58 percent first half shooting, led 46-32 at halftime and finished with the 12 point win.

The Lopers were led by junior Beth Swift (LeMars, Iowa), who, for the third time this year, tied her career-high with 28 points (Morningside, Dec. 21, Western State, Jan. 4).

Three other Lopers were in double figures, as sophomore Allison Kruger (Paulina, Iowa) had 17 points and senior Becky Schroder (Belden) and junior Mamissa Mwenentanda (Lubumbashi, Congo) each had 11. Mwenentanda had a double double on the night as she also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Fort Hays State (13-13, 8-8 RMAC) was led by Jamie Heiman's 21 points.

The UNK men are home Friday night as they host Colorado College at 7:30 p.m. Both teams will return to road RMAC play Saturday night as they travel to Metro State.
