Women
Now 2nd in the Nation; Men Streak at Nine
Kearney, NE – The University of Nebraska at Kearney basketball teams continued their dominance over rival Fort Hays State Tuesday night in front of 4,987 fans at the Health & Sports Center. The men upset the 19th-ranked Tigers, 98-90, their eight straight victory over a Hays team. The UNK women were victorious 86-52, their 10th straight home victory over Hays. The home court win streak is now at 82 games.
The UNK men, winners of night straight, improve to 12-3 and 8-2 in the RMAC. The Hays men drop to 14-3, 9-1 in league play. This is the longest winning streak for UNK since 1996-97 season when the Lopers won 11 in a row.
The Loper women pushed their record to 17-0 and 10-0 in the RMAC. Earlier in the day, UNK jumped four spots to 2nd in the USA TODAY/ESPN/WBCA Top 25 Coaches' poll.
In the men's game, UNK trailed only once (4-2) all night and withstood several Tiger rallies to secure the win. Five players were in double figures, led by Nick Svehla with 23. The sophomore from Omaha also had eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Fellow sophomore Mike Gitt (Valley) had 19 points and five boards off the bench. UNK managed the victory despite losing two starters (Nick Branting and Nate Mohs) to foul trouble.
The Lopers got out to a 33-22 first half lead by hitting five of their first six three point shots. However, Hays was just as hot, hitting 65 percent of their first half field goals. The lead was down to five, 53-48, at halftime.
Strong offensive rebounding (11 in second half) and continued hot shooting got Hays even closer and they finally tied the game, 67-67, with 12:58 to go. But, UNK went on an 11-1 run to lead 78-70 minutes later. The Tigers got the lead down to two, 90-88, with 2:04 to play but the Lopers tallied six straight to finally put away the game.
UNK shot a sizzling 56 percent for the game while the Tigers cooled off (44.4) in the second half. Tony Thomas (26 points, 14 rebounds) was strong in defeat but was 4 of 15 at the free throw line.
The UNK women held Hays to 28 percent field goal shooting in a 34-point rout. Junior guard Beth Swift tallied 22 points (16 in the first half), while three other players each had 13. One of those was center Mamissa Mwenentanda, who also grabbed nine boards. It was her first game since January 5th.
Hays came out strong, and led 23-22 after a Jamie Heiman layup at the 9:33 of the first half. Over the next five minutes, the Lopers outscored Hays 16-4 to lead 38-27. Hays wouldn't get closer than nine points the rest of the evening.
Shauna Porter's 18 points led the Hays attack.
Metro State visits the Lopers Friday night. The Roadrunner men won the NCAA Division II National Championship last year.
