Women's
Basketball Opens
With 79-point Victory
Lopers
Crush College of St. Mary
Kearney, NE — The University of Nebraska at Kearney women's
basketball team began its 2000-01 season with a bang…literally.
The Lopers set three school records (margin of victory, team
assists and field goals made in a game) and tied another (points scored)
in a 114-35 win over the College of St. Mary (Omaha) Friday afternoon in
Mankato, Minnesota. The game is part of the inaugural Pepsi Tip-Off
Tournament, hosted by Minnesota State. The UNK-CSM match-up was also the
first-ever game held in MSU's new Bresnan Arena.
The previous record for margin of victory (69) and points scored
came on December 13, 1996, when UNK whipped New Mexico Highlands, 114-45.
This is the eighth time in the Amy Stephens era (1994-present) the
Lopers have held a team under 40 points. Last year, UNK held McPherson
College (Kansas) to 30 points, the fewest in the Stephens era
UNK made 49 shots from the floor and dished out 38 assists. The
previous records in these categories were 26 assists (vs. Colorado
Christian, 2/13/99) and 46 field goals (vs. Southern Colorado, 1/3/97)
Today, the Lopers got out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back.
Sophomore forward Allison Kruger (Paullina, Ia.) tallied 15 of her
19 points in the first 20 minutes to help UNK lead by 40 points (56-16) at
halftime. UNK made 58.1 percent of its shots in the first half while the
NAIA Flames (4 of 28) were at 14.3 percent. Things stayed the same in the
second half as the Lopers got even hotter (58.5) from the field.
Five different Lopers scored in double figures with three tallying
19. Besides Kruger, junior guard Anny Burdorf (Emmettsburg, Ia.)
and freshman forward Heather Steffen (West Point) were one shy of
20. Steffen and sophomore forward Emily Ohm (Elkhorn) led the team
in rebounds with 10 a piece.
UNK plays the winner of Minnesota State and Minnesota-Crookston
tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. CST.
