Lopers
Get By Talented Mesa State, 62-56
Kearney, NE — The 7th-ranked University of Nebraska at Kearney women's basketball team had its roughest shooting night of the year but hung on for a 62-56 road win over Mesa State Friday night in Grand Junction, Colorado. UNK improves to 13-0 and 6-0 in the RMAC. The Mavericks, the top team in the West Division, fall to 6-6, 3-2 in the RMAC.
The Lopers need two more wins to tie the best start in school history. The 1997-98 squad, which finished 26-4, began the year with 15 consecutive victories.
UNK, the top shooting team in Division II at 51 percent, had trouble against annually the best defensive team in the league. The Lopers connected on just 37 percent of their field goals (23/61), their lowest effort of the year. In addition, leading scorers Beth Swift (19.8) and Allison Kruger (15.4) didn't score in the first half and combined to tally only 13 points in the entire game.
But, the Lopers can play their own defense and, thanks to holding Mesa to 27.6 percent shooting in the second half, opened up an 18-point second half lead (54-36). However, the Mavericks didn't fold, cutting the lead to 58-53 win under 45 seconds left. Kruger made four of eight free throws in the final minute to stave off the Mesa comeback; the Mavs did miss a three pointer with 30 seconds left that could have cut the lead to just three points.
Forward Becky Schroeder led the Loper attack with 16 points (12 in the first half) and seven rebounds. Center Mammisa Mwenentanda (10 points, seven rebounds) was the only other player in double figures. Forward Emily Ohm (eight points, five rebounds) was huge off the bench and Anny Burdorf (nine points, three treys) was on again after going scoreless last night.
UNK hosts Adams State next Saturday in its only game of the week.
