Orediggers Swept by Lopers

Kearney, NE – The University of Nebraska at Kearney basketball teams finished off their first of two weekends away from home by sweeping the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers Saturday afternoon in Golden, Colorado.

The Loper men extended their winning streak to 12 games, the longest such streak in a decade, by whipping Mines, 92-74. UNK (15-3, 11-2 RMAC) led by 14 points at halftime and were never in trouble. The 2nd-ranked women (19-1, 12-1 RMAC) had a much tougher time with Mines. UNK trailed by one point at halftime and it was a see saw affair until about the 8:00 minute mark of the second half. That's when the Lopers finally got control of the contest and went on to win, 64-53.

In the men's game, Nick Svhehla recorded his recorded his seventh double double of the season to lead the Lopers. He tallied 25 points on 11 of 21 shooting from the field while grabbing 11 rebounds, including six offensive. UNK held Mines to 35 percent shooting in the first half and would get out to a comfortable 47-33 halftime edge. The Lopers took excellent care of the basketball, having only six turnovers in the game.

Nate Mohs and Mike Gitt each chipped in with 14 while Anthony Harms added 12 points. For Harms, this was the first game in his career (77 games) he didn't attempt a single three pointer. Thus, his consecutive games with at least one made trey ends at 42.

Also in the Loper record book, Harms (1,262) passed Matt Kaminski (1,154) for 14th on the career scoring list. Mohs (1,311) is currently in 12th place, and should pass Jon Bergmeier (1,337) next weekend. With two steals, Mohs tied Sam Somerhalder for third (170) in the career steals list. Mohs passed Tom Kropp (169) in yesterday's action.

Earlier in the day, Allison Kruger had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the women past a tough Orediggers team. This was the second straight contest in which UNK faced an opponent who slowed the game's tempo to a crawl.

Down 23-22 at half, the Lopers outscored Mines 42-30 in the game's final 20 minutes. UNK lost the rebounding war (40-28) but shot better from the field (44.4 to 36.7) and forced five more turnovers (22 to 27). UNK was also 21 of 25 at the free throw line; Mines attempted just six free shots.

Becky Schroeder (15 points), thanks to a seven for seven effort at the free throw line, was in double figures for the second time this week. Mamissa Mwenentanda (11 points, nine rebounds) was strong off the bench and the only other UNK player to crack double digits.

Mines 6-5 sophomore center Kim Good, who had a monster game against Hays (31 points, 18 rebounds, nine blocks), was strong in defeat. She had 14 points, 16 rebounds (eight offensive) and four blocks.

UNK plays at Colorado Christian next Friday and then at Regis on Saturday. The games will start at 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. CST both nights.
