KEARNEY,
NEB. - The
University of Nebraska at Kearney women’s basketball team outscored
Morningside 31-12 over the final 12 minutes to record a 85-72 victory
Thursday night in Sioux City, Iowa. UNK, ranked 10th in the nation,
improves to 10-0 while Morningside drops to 3-7.
It
was a homecoming for nearly everyone on the Loper roster. Three players-- Beth
Swift, Allison Kruger and Anny
Burdorf -- all hail from Northwest Iowa. In addition, Becky Schroeder, Emily Ohm and Heather
Steffen are all from towns in Northeast Nebraska. Of the 800 or so in
attendance, about 70 percent were UNK fans.
The
Mustangs, thanks to 50 percent three point shooting in the first half and
tough rebounding throughout the game, almost spoiled the party. Down 46-42
at halftime, Morningside grabbed its biggest lead of the game, 60-54, with
12:47 left.
That’s
when the tide turned. UNK scored nine straight and, 18 of the next 22
points, to lead 72-64 with just under six minutes left. The Mustangs would
never get within nine the rest of the way. They made only three field
goals over a ten minute period.
Swift
had a career-high 28 points on 11 of 21 shooting from the field. Her
previous best was 27 against Morehead State last year. A native of nearby
LeMars, Ia., she had 15 points by the break. With two treys tonight, Swift
now is at 110 for her career, seven off the school mark of 117 (Kara
Graham).
Center
Mamissa Mwenentanda had a
monster game, scoring 24 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. She had 19
points, and eight of her nine field goals, in the first half. Mwenentanda
also had seven boards, six offensive, in the first 20 minutes. After
halftime, she grabbed 10 rebounds and went to the foul line seven times.
Mwenentanda
is the fourth Loper to have 17 carrams in a game, the last being Jessica
Kedrowski in 1995. Julie Volquardson had 18 rebounds in a 1985 game to set
the UNK record.
Burdorf
tallied nine points and three steals. She had back-to-back layups that put
UNK head 69-62 early in the second half run. Kruger had 12 of her 14
points in the second half and was 5 of 9 from the floor after halftime.
Morningside
was led by the best rebounder in Division II, Trish Martin. She pulled
down 18 rebounds, one more than her season average. She had 12 points, and
12 rebounds, in the second half. After making 6 of 12 threes in the first
half, the Mustangs missed all three they took in the final 20 minutes.
UNK
again shot well from the floor
(49.1) while holding Morningside to 39.1 percent. The Lopers also
forced 24 turnovers. Thanks to Martin, the Stangs outboarded the Lopers,
47-38. UNK had a plus eight rebound margin coming into the game.
Nebraska
Wesleyan, at 8-1, visits the Lopers next Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
