Bulldogs' Last Second Steal Dooms Lopers
Kearney, NE –
The
University of Nebraska at Kearney women’s basketball teams late rally
fell short as the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs ended the Lopers season in the
second round of the NCAA Tournament, 61-57, Saturday night in Grand Forks,
ND.
UNK,
the second seed in the North Central Region finishes the year with a 27-3
record. UMD, the 6th seed in the regoin, improves to 21-10 and
will play No. 1 seed North Dakota tomorrow night for the region
championship. The Lopers are now 3-7 all-time in the NCAAs and have lost
three straight in the tourney. Those losses have come by just a combined
seven points.
Duluth
had its biggest lead of the game, 59-50, with 2:54 left when UNK made its
move. The Lopers made three straight shots, cutting the lead to 59-57 on a
Beth Swift (13 points, 8 rebounds) jumper with 46 seconds remaining.
In the late run, the Lopers forced two 25 second violations.
UNK
had a chance to tie the game after Duluth’s Jamie Bell missed a three
with 14 seconds left. After a timeout, Swift brought the ball up court and
got by UMD’s Katie Anderson but she recovered and stole the ball from
Swift. Laura Hanson made two free throws to secure the win for UMD.
A
defensive struggle in the second half, UNK held UMD to just 30 percent
shooting (6 of 20) after halftime and didn’t allow Kim Toewe (13 points)
or Kate Madrinich (18 points) to make a single field goal in the final 20
minutes. The duo combined to score 63 points in a win over Southwest State
Friday night.
But,
the Lopers offense also struggled. UNK was held without a field goal for
over 9 1/2 minutes in the second half (12:14 to 2:40) and the team tallied
10 points over the final 12 minutes of the game. In fact, both teams
didn’t make a single shot from the floor in a five-minute span in the
second half.
UNK
started off the game with a bang, grabbing a 6-0 lead a forcing Duluth to
call a timeout. The ‘Dawgs ran off the game’s next eight points and
never trailed again.
