Stephens
Tied Wurtz on Career Win List
Kearney, Neb. - The 12th-ranked University of Nebraska at Kearney women's basketball team remained perfect on the season by winning at Colorado-Colorado Springs, 82-69, and at Southern Colorado, 74-60, this past weekend.
The victories moved head coach Amy Stephens, in her seventh year at UNK, into a tie with Dan Wurtz (1982-93) for most victories by a head coach in school history (154). Stephens is 154-33 in her tenure at UNK. Wurtz posted a 154-148 record in 11-years as leader of the Lopers.
In both contests, the Lopers enjoyed double-digits leads both nights but the Mountain Lions and Thunderwolves each stayed within striking distance until the end.
Sophomore Allison Kruger tallied 46 points in the two games, setting new career highs. Coming into the weekend, her previous best point total was 20, set last year in a win at Colorado Mines. She had 22 at UCCS and then had 24 at USC.
Friday night in the Springs, the Lopers got out to a 42-34 halftime lead thanks to 55 percent shooting from the floor. However, UCCS was in the contest thanks to 17 first half points from guard Heidi Koskovich. In the final 20 minutes, she tallied only three points and the Lopers managed to overcome 60 percent shooting from the Lions to pull out a 13-point win.
Besides Kruger's heriocs, Becky Schroeder had 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Her previous best total was 13, against Colorado Christian last year.
In Pueblo, the game was tight until the Lopers closed the first half on a 9-3 run to open up a 10-point lead. Beth Swift (23 points, eight rebounds) had two of her five threes during this run.
The lead grew to 16 in the second half before USC rallied and cut the lead down to just six points, 65-59, with 1:25 left. UNK would make seven of eight free throws to put away USC for good. Anny Burdorf (12 points, four assists) joined Kruger and Swift in double figures.
The Lopers made exactly 50 percent of their field goals (26/52) and held USC to just 38 percent from the floor (25/66). UNK also made more free throws (16) then the Wolves attempted 14).
UNK hosts Fort Lewis and New Mexico Highlands next Sunday and Monday in Kearney. This will be the first weekend junior center Mamissa Mwenentanda is eligible to play. She joined the UNK program almost one year ago.
