Schroeder Named MVP: Lopers End With Big Run
Denver, CO — For the fifth time in six years, and for the third straight year, the University of Nebraska at Kearney women's basketball team are champions of the RMAC. Tonight in Denver, the Lopers tallied 12 of the game's last 16 points to get by second-seeded Mesa State, 76-66.
"I think our tournament experience really showed. We didn't panic when they grabbed the lead late," head coach Amy Stephens said. "In the last three or so minutes, we buckled down defensively and were aggressive on offense. We made the plays."
UNK (27-2) was up 59-51 with 6:58 left when the Mavericks (19-10) made their move. They outscored the Lopers 11-2 over the next three minutes and grabbed only their second lead of the game, 62-61, after Lindsay Clegg made a free throw.
Of the final 16 points in the game, 14 were scored at the free throw line. The Lopers made 5 of 6 free shots, and made on field goal, to lead 69-62 at the 1:41 mark. Mesa closed within four, 70-66, 2ith 31 seconds left but UNK finished the game with four straight free throws.
Senior center Becky Schroeder earned tourney MVP honors. She led UNK with 19 points and nine rebounds tonight. A Loper has earned MVP honors in each of the last six seasons.
"Becky really deserved the award. This is the time of year you need your seniors to step up and she has done that all week long in the tournament," Stephens said.
Sophomore Allison Kruger (18 points) and junior guard Beth Swift (15 points, 4 assists) also made the all-tourney team. Junior Anny Burdorf (13) was in double figures for the sixth straight game.
UNK led by six at the break thanks to 75 percent shooting from the three point line (6 of 8). The Lopers struggled at the free throw line (18 of 31) but held Mesa to just 38 percent shooting from the field. Kelli O'Deyer led the Mavs with 20 points but was only 6 of 23 from the floor.
UNK has now won nine straight RMAC tourney games and 16 of their last 17. The Lopers will find out Sunday night who, and where, they will play in the NCAA Tournament.
