Both
Loper Teams Advance in RMAC Tournament
Kearney, NE — For the sixth straight season, both the University
of Nebraska at Kearney basketball teams have made the Final Four of the
RMAC Tournament. The 5th-ranked women defeated Fort Hays State
97-78 while the Loper men downed Southern Colorado, 91-75.
For the women (25-2),
it was their 86th straight home win, breaking the NCAA Division
II record of 85, set by West Texas A & M from 1987-91. Division III
Rust College of Mississippi holds the all division record at 88. The Loper
win streak began on January 31, 1995 with an 88-75 win over Augustana
(SD). Their last setback in Kearney was on January 25, 1995, against
Northern State (SD), 79-71.
"It’s a great achievement for all the players that have come
through this program. We set a goal each year to win our home games and
here we are six years later," head coach Amy Stephens said.
"Once the season is over, and years from now, I think the
significance of the record will hit us. Right now, we're focused on the
RMAC Tournament and the NCAA's."
UNK, the top seed in the eight-team tournament, will play 5th-seed
Colorado-Colorado Springs Friday at 2:30 p.m. CST in Denver. The Mountain
Lions won at Regis, 75-70, tonight. The Lopers are going for the fifth
RMAC Tournament title in the last six years. They have won seven straight
tourney games and are 14-1 all-time in the tournament.
Against Hays, the Lopers shot 70 percent in the first half to get
out to a 55-40 halftime lead. The Tigers didn't get the score below 13
points in the second half.
Six players were in double figures, led by Allison Kruger with 19.
Reserve Anny Burdorf had 13 of her 17 points in the final 20 minutes and
Emily Ohm added a season-high 10 points.
Shanua Porter was perfect at the free throw line (10-10) and had 19
points to lead Hays (15-14).
The UNK men (21-5) completed their first undefeated home season
(15-0) since the 1986-87 season. The Lopers will play the winner of Mesa
State-Colorado Mines Friday at 8:30 p.m. CST
The Lopers used the three pointer to advance, making 12 of 16 shots
(75 percent), including an unreal seven of nine after halftime.
Up by one at halftime, UNK made four straight treys to open up a
nine point lead, 54-45. The Lopers made their first six threes in the
second half, the last coming from Chad Sheffield that made the score 71-55
with 11:55 to play. The Thunderwolves (16-12) wouldn't get the lead under
10 points the rest of the night.
All five starters were in double figures, led by senior John Webber
(19 points, five threes). USC was paced by Jermaine Mason and Seth Bailey,
who each scored 18 apiece.
