Both Teams Cruise to RMAC Victories
Kearney, NE – The streaks for the Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams continued with little trouble Saturday night against the Colorado Christian Cougars. The women, behind a second half surge, won 67-49 while the men extended their school-record win streak to 17 games with a 94-73 decision over CCU. The Loper men (18-3) are a perfect 15-0 in RMAC play while the women (19-3) are 14-1 in league games.
The Christian women (4-18, 1-14 RMAC) came in with only one RMAC win but hung around until midway through the second half. UNK led by only seven at the break due to 13 first half turnovers. After a Candida Reyes three pulled CCU within two, 36-34, at the 15:24 mark of the second half, the Lopers took control. UNK scored the game's next 14 points, capped by a Dawn Schreiber jumper, to open up a 16-point lead, 50-34, with 11 minutes left in the contest. CCU never got the lead below 15 points the rest of the night.
Schreiber didn't miss a shot all night long (7 of 7 FG; 4 of 4 FT) en route to tying her career high of 18 points. Beth Swift had 15 points and five threes in the first half and finished with 18 points and six bombs while Heather Steffen came off the bench to record another double double (10 points, 13 rebounds). UNK had only five second half miscues and shot 55.0 percent from the floor after the break.
Elspeth Whipple led the Cougars with 12 points.
The Loper men used a 13-2 run early in the first half run to quickly take control of things and held a double digit lead for the last 30 minutes of the contest. After a cold shooting last night, the NCAA's best shooting team made their first seven shots in the second half en route to a 55.9 percent effort for the game.
Five players were in double figures, led by Nick Svehla with 18. Sophomore Brian Dunagan had 12 of his career-high 14 points in the first half while Mike Gitt came off the bench to hit 6 of 7 shots and finished with 14 points.
CCU had four starters in double digits, including 15 from Matt Chambless (5 of 7 three pointers).
Long time rival Fort Hays State visits Kearney Tuesday night.
