Men Survive Second Half Rally by CCU
Kearney, NE — The beat goes on for the Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams. The Lopers swept Colorado Christian Saturday night in Denver to push the win streaks to 11 for the men and eight for the women.
The Loper men (12-3, 9-0 RMAC) held on for a 93-84 victory over the Cougars while the women (13-3, 8-1 RMAC) used their defense to take home a 72-62 victory. Both teams play at Fort Hays State Tuesday and then go to Metro State next Friday.
The UNK men, behind hot first half shooting (62.5), led by 20 at halftime (48-28) and increased the lead to 52-28 with around 16 minutes to play. That's when the Cougars began their run, scoring the next 10 points to come within 14. CCU went 7 of 11 from the three-point line after halftime and continually chipped away at the UNK lead, getting within seven points on several occasions. The Lopers responded with a big defensive stop or a basket by Nick Svehla (16-second half points) to keep the Cougars at bay. UNK also made 23 of 27 free throws to further help its cause.
All five starters were in double figures, paced by 18 from Svehla and 16 from Nick Branting. The Noth Platte sophomore also had 10 rebounds, making this his fourth double double of the year. Brian Dunagan and Richard Dionne each tallied 13 points thanks to three treys a piece. Jason Brown, coming off the bench, had eight points on perfect 4 of 4 shooting.
UNK cooled off from the floor in the second half (44.0) but still shot over 50 percent (54.4) for the game. The Lopers have shot no worse than 51.6 percent during the win streak and are at 57.5 over the last 11 games. CCU was led by its leading scorer, Lance Goeddel, who had 23 points.
Like the night before at Regis, the Loper women used defensive to notch another win. UNK held CCU to 38.6 percent from the floor and forced 17 turnovers. The Lopers also held their own on the boards (32-33) after a tough night against the Rangers in that department.
Beth Swift had another 20 point effort, thanks to 10 of 12 shooting from the free throw line. Anny Burdorf came off the bench to tally 14 points on 4 of 5 shooting from the field. Burdorf has scored in double figures in five of the last seven games. Heather Steffen had 13 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
The Lopers led for most of the game and held a seven point edge at the break. Behind Elspeth Whipple (21 points, 4 treys), the Cougars (3-12, 1-8) stayed around and got the lead down to four points several times. UNK countered with good free throw shooting (26 of 34) and clutch shots from Swift and Taryn Ninemire (10 points). With two triples, Ninemire breaks the school record for threes made by a freshman (32, Kara Graham, 1994-95). The Fairfield native now has 33 on the year.
