Swift Has 28 Points, Eight Threes
Kearney, NE — The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams, at home for the first time in nearly a month, extended their winning streaks by both downing the Colorado School of Mines Friday night in the Health & Sports Center. The men, winners of 14 straight, used a big second half to beat Mines, 81-63, while the UNK women, sparked by Beth Swift's 28 points and eight threes, used a big first half to win, 70-54. The women, on an 11-game win streak are 16-3, 11-1 in the RMAC. The Loper men are 15-3, 12-0 in league play.
In the early game, Swift was 8 of 13 from the three point line for the second consecutive game. The efforts tie her own school records for threes made and attempted in game. She hit seven of her first eight three point attempts to have 21 points in the first 16 minutes of the game. After missing four three point shots, Swift ended the half with a running jumper that gave the Lopers a 16-point lead (38-22). Swift made three treys in a 1:07 span to turn a 20-16 UNK lead into a 29-16 advantage.
Mines (12-7, 6-6 RMAC) switched to a box and one defense in the second half and Swift only got one shot off, a three with 41 seconds left. The Orediggers opened the second half on a 16-4 to trail by only six points, 44-38, with 12:05 to play. UNK tallied the next five points and never allowed Mines to get within eight points the rest of the way.
With Swift shut down, Heather Steffen (nine) and Kari Boscaljon (seven) supplied the offense in the second half. Anny Burdorf added 11 off the bench and Dawn Schreiber had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Marissa Eichhorn led Mines with 17 points and six rebounds.
The Loper men outscored the Orediggers (4-15, 2-10 RMAC) by 13 points in the second half to blow open a tight contest. UNK has now won 25 straight home games dating back to February of 2000.
UNK, which held Mines to 16.0 percent (4-25) shooting from the three point line, trailed 30-27 with 5:18 left in the first half. The team finished the first frame on an 8-0 run, capped by a Nick Branting layup with 54 seconds left.
Mines hung around until midway through the second half. The Lopers, ahead 47-38, scored five straight points to grab their first double digit lead of the game, 52-38, at the 13:53 mark. Mines wouldn't get closer than 10 points the rest of the night.
Anthony Harms led the way with 21 points and five assists while Mike Gitt came off the bench to score 18 points on eight of nine shooting. The nation's best shooting team was at an even 50.0 percent (29 of 58) for the night.
