Ninemire Injury Hurts Lopers Chances
Kearney, NE – Southwest State of Minnesota used a 17-2 run midway through the second half to beat the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team 67-57 Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Grand Junction, Colo. The Lopers, the 3rd seed in the North Central Region, finish the year 23-7 while sixth seeded Southwest improves to 23-7 and will play North Dakota tomorrow night in the regional semifinals.
UNK freshman guard Taryn Ninemire, the team's second leading scorer (12.2 ppg, 68 threes) and a nice complement to all-everything Beth Swift on the perimeter, injured her left leg at the 15:00 mark of the first half and didn't return. Despite the big loss, the Lopers, thanks to staunch defense (23 Southwest turnovers), led at the half and held a 46-38 edge with around 12 minutes left in the game.
That's when the Mustang run began. Southwest turned to 6-2 senior center Amy Bowman on offense (team-high 18 points, nine rebounds) and focused their defensive attention to Swift to grab a 55-48 lead with about eight minutes left in the game. UNK got within five, 60-55, soon after but Southwest quickly tallied four points and the Lopers never got within striking distance again.
Swift had 11 first half points and finished with 14 in her final game. She finishes her brilliant career with 1,414 points and 247 three pointers. She is 3rd in Division II history in three point percentage (44.3/247 of 558).
Another senior, Shelly Marks, had a eight points and in her final game. Sophomore center Dawn Schreiber added 11 points and three rebounds. UNK made eight of 31 field goal attempts after half time for 25.8 percent.
Southwest out rebounded the much smaller Lopers, 43-21, and shot 66.7 percent in the second half. Three other starters besides Bowman were in double digits for the Mustangs.
UNK is now 3-8 all-time in eight NCAA appearances.
