Lopers to Play in RMAC Tourney Semifinals
Kearney, NE – The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams advanced to the RMAC Tournament semifinals with a pair of wins tonight in the Health & Sports Center. The top-seeded men beat a pesky Colorado Christian team, 84-68, while the second-seeded women got some revenge against the Colorado School of Mines, 69-44.
The Loper men (23-4) will take on 4th-seeded Fort Hays State Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Tigers beat 5th-seeded Mesa State, 76-62, earlier tonight in Kansas. The UNK women (22-5) will play 3rd-seeded Regis Friday after the men's game. The Rangers rallied past 6th-seeded Hays, 78-70, tonight in Denver.
In the late game, Nick Svehla had 19 points on 9 of 12 shooting and Brian Dunagan had a career-high 16 points to pace the Lopers. UNK shot 52.5 percent for the game but the Cougars (10-17), shooting 39 percent, were within 10 points most of the night.
Ahead just by two points at halftime, UNK scored six of the first eight points in the second half to lead 44-36 with 18:06 to play. Over the next 10 minutes, the Loper lead ranged between eight and 12 points.
UNK started to secure things around the five minute mark when a Dunagan layup gave UNK its biggest lead of the night, 71-58. The Cougars never got within nine the rest of the night as they started to shoot three pointer after three pointer.
Nick Branting had 10 of his 12 points in the second half and Richard Dionne sunk four three pointers en route to a 16-point night.
Ash Cannan and Clinton Fuller paced CCU with 14 points a piece.
In the women's game, freshman Taryn Ninemire tallied a career-high 21 points and the Lopers forced 27 Oredigger turnovers in a 25-point victory. Mines (16-11) beat UNK, 77-68, last Thursday night in Golden, Colo.
UNK shot 35.8 percent from the field, its second lowest effort of the year, but Mines had more trouble scoring against the Loper defense. Six-five center Kim Good (17 points) was the only Oredigger in double figures with no other Mines player scoring consistently until the game was well over.
The Lopers finished the first half on an 11-3 run, capped by a Beth Swift jumper with 45 seconds left, to open up a 16-point halftime advantage. Mines never made a serious run in the second half and the UNK lead grew to 20 points with about nine minutes remaining.
Ninemire sunk 4 of 8 three-point shots to get to 21 points. Swift added 11 and reserves Anny Burdorf and Kari Boscaljon each added 12 points apiece.
This was the 10th straight RMAC Tournament victory for the UNK women. The team is 18-2 all-time in RMAC tourney games.
