Men
Shoot 72 Percent, Break School Record
Kearney, NE — The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams continued their outstanding play Friday night in Denver as both clubs swept Regis. The men, shooting a school-record 71.7 percent from the field, won 90-75 in the early game while the UNK women notched an extremely important victory, 64-54.
The men, winners of 10 straight, are 11-3. The Lopers remain tied with Metro State for the East Division lead (8-0). The UNK women, not to be out done, have won seven straight (12-3). The victory over the Rangers not only gives the team sole possession of first (7-1) but should also help in the region rankings. Regis (11-4, 5-3 RMAC) has been ahead of UNK all year long in that department.
The early game might have been the best shooting performance in recent college basketball history. The Lopers missed just 13 field goals, going 33 for 46, while Regis (7-8, 4-4 RMAC) missed just 15 times (32 of 47 or 68.1 percent). UNK had just set the school mark for FG percentage (67.9) in its 123-59 win over York January 8th. The Lopers also hit a season high 13 three's, just three shy of the school record (16, vs. William Penn College, 1994).
Six players were in double figures, led by 17 from Nick Svehla and 16 apiece from Richard Dionne and Nick Branting. Dionne had all of his points, thanks to four threes, in the second half. Chad Sheffield came off the bench to tally a career-high 11 points on 4 for 4 shooting from the field.
UNK, which trailed by six points in the first half, took control of the game midway through the second half. The Lopers used a 10-2 run, capped by a Svehla jumper, to lead 57-46 at the 13:02 mark. Regis came back and cut the lead to four points, 60-56, on a layup by DeMel Tarver with 9:18 left.. UNK responded with a 7-0 run, finished by a Dionne triple, that pretty much sealed the victory.
Also in double digits was Anthony Harms (13) and Brian Dunagan (11). Harms, Dunagan and Sheffield each had three treys on the night.
The Rangers, with only seven healthy players, had three different players with 15 points.
The women's game was a defensive battle as the Lopers shot just 40.7 percent and Regis 36.9 percent. UNK also forced 21 turnovers to offset Regis' advantage on the glass (46-31).
Beth Swift, making 4 of 9 three point shots, led the way with 20 points. It marked the fourth time in the last six contests she had cracked the 20 point plateau. Taryn Ninemire and Anny Burdorf each had 12 points while Heather Steffen was close (8 points, career-best 12 rebounds) to another double double.
The Lopers led for the last 24 minutes but Regis hung around to make a game of it. A jumper by Burdorf gave UNK its first seven point lead of the contest, 54-47, with 6:23 to play. Regis cut the lead to just three, 54-51, after a layup by Haley MacNeil with 5:43 remaining. UNK quickly got the lead back up to seven and held Regis to only one field goal over the last four minutes.
Melissa Sauter came off the bench to lead Regis with 11 points.
