Men Host CCU, Women Mines in RMAC Tourney
Kearney, NE – North Platte sophomore Nick Branting had a career-high 25 points to lead the Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team to a 90-78 win at Chadron State (15-11, 10-9 RMAC) Saturday night. It was the final regular season game of the year for both clubs and marked the eighth straight UNK win on Chadron's home court.
The men (22-4, 18-1 RMAC) will be the No. 1 seed in this week's RMAC Tournament. Three teams tied for the eighth seed but Colorado Christian (10-16, 7-12 RMAC) won the tiebreaker and will be coming to Kearney Tuesday night. The Lopers have beaten the Cougars twice this season.
The Loper women ended a two game skid with a 75-57 decision over the Eagles (5-21, 5-12 RMAC). UNK (21-5, 16-3 RMAC) will be the No. 2 seed in the league tournament. Seventh seed Colorado Mines (16-10, 10-9) will be visiting Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The Orediggers came to Kearney last year in the first round, falling 83-30. Mines beat UNK, 77-68, this past Thursday in Golden, Colo.
At Chadron, the men shot nearly 60 percent from the field in the second half and ended at 54 percent for the night. The Lopers also nailed 21 of 26 free throws and forced 17 Eagle turnovers.
UNK led most of the night but Chadron stayed within striking distance. UNK led 54-43 early in the second half but Chadron came back and cut the lead to just four, 66-62, with 8:58 to play. The Lopers went on a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to get the lead back into double digits and the Eagles never got the lead under eight again.
Branting sunk 10 of 15 field goals and also led UNK in rebounds with eight. Nick Svehla had 19 points while Mike Gitt came off the bench to tally 11. Gitt can join Svehla and Anthony Harms in the 1,000 point club with 19 more points.
Also playing well were Tanner Engel (eight points, three rebounds) and Harms (eight points, six assists)
In the early game, UNK ended the first half on a 16-6 run and never looked back in beating the Eagles for the second straight time this year. Four players were in double figures, led by Taryn Ninemire's 17.
Ahead 17-14 with 6:59 left in the fist half, the decisive run started with two Anny Burdorf free throws and ended with a free shot by Beth Swift with 24 seconds left. During the run Ninemire hit two threes and UNK made six of eight free throws. Chadron cut the lead to six early in the second half but UNK quickly got the lead back into double digits and the Eagles never made a run again.
Ninemire was perfect from the three point line (3-3) and also had four assists. Burdorf sunk three treys en route to a 16 point night. Dawn Schreiber made 7 of 9 shots to also reach 16 points while Heather Steffen continues to own the glass. She again had 10 rebounds, marking the fourth straight game she has reached double figures in that category. The West Point native now has 237 rebounds this year, well within reach of the school record (264, Ginger Keller, 1990-91).
