Late Rally Lifts Men's Basketball to Win
Kearney, NE — The longest winning streak in Division II men's basketball now stands at 18 games as the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers (19-3, 16-0 RMAC) used a late run to overcome longtime rival Fort Hays State, 71-69, Tuesday night in the Health & Sports Center. The UNK women (20-3, 15-1 RMAC) didn't needed such heroics as the Lopers beat the Tigers for the 12th straight time in Kearney, 72-47. The Loper women have won 15 straight contests.
Beth Swift tallied 18 of her game-high 26 points in the first half and UNK held the Tigers to 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
Ahead just 6-5 at the 13:42 mark of the first half, Swift and Heather Steffen hit back-to-back threes to start the Loper attack. Swift's fourth three of the first half gave put UNK ahead 23-12 with 6:35 remaining and the Tigers (14-9, 9-7 RMAC) never got within 10 points the rest of the evening.
Swift moved past Tami Tully (1,300) into 7th place on the UNK career scoring list. The LeMars, Ia. Native now stands at 1,322.
Steffen had a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with nine points, six assists and four blocks. Dawn Schreiber added 12 points and six boards.
Metro State visits Kearney Friday night. The Roadrunner men are ranked 24th in the nation and are two-time defending league champs. The men then close out this long home stand with a non-league game Saturday versus Colorado College.
In the men's game, UNK trailed most of the night but never by more than six points. The Tigers (17-6, 11-5 RMAC), which have lost 10 of the last 12 to the Lopers, where ahead 54-49 with 6:40 left. UNK tied the game at 58 on a Nick Branting jumper at the 3:30 mark. UNK then took the lead for good, 61-58, on a "old fashioned" three point play by Nick Svehla with 2:32 remaining.
The Lopers held their biggest lead of the game at 66-60 with 1:29 left by the Tigers cut the lead to one, 70-69, with just seven seconds remaining. Svehla made one of two free shots and then an Ike Smith three pointer was to long, sealing the win for UNK.
Svehla led the way with 24 points and seven boards. He tallied 18 points and grabbed five rebounds in the second half and made eight of 11 free throws. Svehla also scored nine of the Lopers last 11 points.
Branting, with seven second half points, was the only other UNK player in double figures (11). UNK shot 54 percent in the second half to end the night at an even 50 percent.
Anthony Harms (nine points) moved past Bart Kofoed into 8th place on the career scoring list. Harms now has 1,584 career points.
Hays was paced by Smith (16 points, 5 assists) and Melroy McElvey (26 points, 9 rebounds).
