Women Lose First Ever RMAC Home Game
Kearney, NE – The Metro State Roadrunners ended a total of four Nebraska-Kearney streaks Friday night at the Health & Sports Center. The 21st ranked UNK women fell 63-58 and the 14th-ranked Loper men lost 71-67.
The men saw their 18-game win streak end as well as their 29 home court win streak. Ironically, Metro was the last team to win in Kearney (Feb. 11, 2000). The women lost a home RMAC game for the first time ever, ending 78 consecutive home league wins. The setback also ended their 15 game win streak. The Metro women (11-12, 9-7 RMAC) were the last RMAC member school to win in Kearney, way back in 1992 when the Lopers were an independent.
It is not known at this time when the Lopers last two home games on the same night.
The Metro women held UNK to a season low 35.7 percent shooting from the field and had an answer for every Loper run in the second half. The 'Runners led for the last 39 minutes of the game and were up by as many as 14 points in the second half.
The Lopers clawed their way back and trailed by only four points, 58-54, after two Beth Swift free throws with 2:40 remaining. The Lopers stopped Metro in back to back possessions but couldn't score either, missing a baseline jumper and then a three point shot. Metro rebounded the missed three and then hit two free throws to go up by five, 59-54, with 50 seconds left. UNK wouldn't have a chance to tie the game the rest of the night.
Freshman Kari Boscaljon came off the bench to score 14 points and was the only Lopers to shoot well from the floor (6 of 7). Another freshman, Taryn Ninemire, led the way with 15 points on five threes.
Stacia Swanson was the only 'Runner in double figures (16 points).
In the late game, the men's game was a see saw affair between two of the best shooting teams in the nation. Metro had the upper hand, ending the game at 54.5 percent, including a 62.5 effort in the second half. The 24th-ranked 'Runners (20-4, 14-2 RMAC) pressure defense forced the Lopers to take 23 three point shots. In three of the four losses this season, UNK has taken at least 20 three point shots.
Metro was up 64-59 with 3:09 to play but the Lopers tied it at 64 after a three-point play by Nick Svehla with 2:09 left. Metro tallied the next three points and then the Lopers missed two three pointers, the last coming with 12 seconds left on the clock. Metro then made four straight free throws to end the game.
Svehla led UNK with 23 points, 11 coming from the free throw line, and eight rebounds. Mike Gitt came off the bench to score 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting. Anthony Harms suffered a grade two sprain of his left ankle late in the game and did not return. He will likely not play tomorrow against Colorado College. Harms has started every game the Lopers have played the last four years.
Four players were in double figures for Metro, led by Mike Buggs' 18 points.
