FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 27, 2002
The
Streaks Continue
Kearney, NE — The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams ended their
January RMAC road trip with perfect 5-0 records. The women (15-3, 10-1
RMAC), led by a career-high 34 points from Beth Swift, beat Metro State
75-60, to extended their win streak to 10 games. The men, behind 21 second
half points from Nick Svehla, won at Metro State for the first time since
the 1996-97 season, 83-73. The Lopers (14-3, 11-0 RMAC), winners of 13
straight, now have a two game lead in the East Division.
UNK now returns home for six straight RMAC games. The men also have
a non-conference game against Colorado College. The men will try and
continue their dominance at home where they've won 24 straight. The UNK
women have never lost a RMAC home game (73-0).
In the men's game Saturday night, the Lopers trailed at halftime
(31-30) for the first time since the exhibition game at Nebraska. The
Lopers got behind due to 14 turnovers and Metro's 12 first half offensive
rebounds. Thanks to 56 percent shooting, and holding Metro to 36 percent,
UNK was down by just that one point. Nick Branting had 10 of his 14 points
in the first 20 minutes thanks to 4 of 4 shooting from the field.
A layup by Svehla opened the second half and UNK never trailed in
the final 20 minutes. The lead grew to double digits for the first time at
the 11:06 mark, 52-43, after a three by Tanner Engel and a lauyp by Svehla.
Metro, which took 33 more shots than the Lopers, hung around and got as
close as seven points, 71-64, with around three minutes to play.
The nation's top shooting team was at it again, making 27 of 43
field goal attempts for 62.8 percent. UNK shot 68.0 percent (17 of 25)
after halftime. The Lopers, also one of Division II's top free throw
shooting teams, made 23 of 26 free shots.
Svehla finished with
27 points on 10 of 14 shooting. That his is third highest total and the
most since he tallied 28 points against Fort Hays State in the 2000 RMAC
tourney. Brian Dunagan didn't miss a shot all night and matched his career
high (13), a mark he set last week at Colorado Christian.
Lee Bethea led Metro (15-4, 9-2 RMAC) led the 'Runners with 17
points while Patrick Mutombo, one of the leading scorers in the league,
had 14 points.
In the earlier game, Swift was in the zone all night long. She had
19 points, on five threes, in the first half as the Lopers got out of the
gates quickly but led by only four, 31-27, at the break.
Swift continued her fine shooting in the second half and got help
from Taryn Ninemire (13 points, 3 treys) and Heather Steffen (10 points,
13 rebounds). UNK shot 50 percent after the break and slowed down Metro a
bit to extend the lead throughout the night.
Swift finished with 34 points on 11 of 17 shooting. Her eight three
pointers ties her own school record, first set against Regis in December
of 1999. She is the first UNK women's player to reach 30 points since the
1998-99 season and joins Mike Hancock and Anthony Harms as the only Lopers
with 200 three pointers in a career. Through the Metro game, Swift has
sunk 205 threes.
Malene Lindholm led Metro (8-10, 6-5 RMAC) with 14 points.
