Men Win 16th Straight; Women's Streak at 13 Games
Kearney, NE — It wasn't a of thing a beauty but the Nebraska-Kearney men's basketball team (17-3, 14-0 RMAC) still had enough to win their 16th straight game, a 75-66 decision over Regis Friday night at the Health & Sports Center. The win sets the school mark for consecutive wins; the 1979-80 team held the mark with 15 straight. Earlier, the UNK women won their 13th straight game by blitzing the Rangers, 82-53.
The Loper men opened the second half on a 16-2 run and were 21 of 30 at the line after intermission to pull away from the Rangers (9-12, 6-8 RMAC). Nick Svehla, who didn't practice all week due to the flu, led the way with 18 points while Nick Branting had his fifth double double (16 points, 10 rebounds) of the year. Anthony Harms had 14 of his 16 points in the second half. UNK set season highs for free throws made (29) and attempted (40) in a game.
After shooting just 40.7 percent from the floor in the first half, UNK made seven of its first eight field goal attempts in the second half to take at 48-27 lead with 13:59 left in the contest. The Lopers were just 4 of 13 from the floor over the final 11 minutes but consistently made free shots to keep the lead in double digits. Regis did cut the lead to eight, 72-64, with 1:06 to play but the Lopers responded by making three of four free throws.
Cortez Washington, with 21 second half points, came off the bench to lead the Rangers (25).
The Loper women handed Regis (16-5, 10-4 RMAC) only its fifth loss of the season. UNK forced 32 turnovers and held the Rangers to 36.9 percent shooting in the second half.
Freshman Taryn Ninemire tied her career high (20 points) while sophomore Heather Steffen had 17 points, nine rebounds, five steals, two blocks and an assist. Beth Swift chipped in with 13 points while freshman Kari Boscaljon came off the bench to add 13 points and three boards.
Both teams shot over 50 percent in the first 20 minutes but the Lopers, thanks to some threes, held a 32-27 lead with 4:49 left in the first half. UNK scored the game's next 10 points, capped by a five-point possession by Swift (two free throws and a three), to put the lead into double figures. Regis never got within 10 points the rest of the night and the Loper lead only got bigger in the second half.
Regis was paced by Erica Schutte who recorded a double double (14 points, 10 boards).
Colorado Christian visits UNK tomorrow night.
