Kruger's Double Double Leads Lopers
Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams finished a four game RMAC road trip Saturday night in Chadron with its winning streaks still intact. The 5th-ranked UNK men's squad remained the only unbeaten team in Division II with an 83-73 decision over the Eagles while the Loper women won its 10th straight game with an 82-79 win over Chadron.
On the women's side, UNK (14-3, 9-0 RMAC) continued an amazing trend. The Lopers have now had at least a 10 game win streak in each of the past eight seasons.
The early game went down to the wire as UNK trailed at halftime for the second time this week. Junior Allison Kruger, who led the team in points and (26) and rebounds (11), made two free throws with 17 seconds left to put UNK up by three. After a timeout with around six seconds left, Chadron tried to tie the game but the Lopers forced a turnover to seal the deal.
UNK shot 52.9 percent for the game but the Eagles were close behind at 50.9. CSC also out rebounded UNK by eight and had five less turnovers. However, the Lopers made 24 of 28 free throws compared to Chadron's 14 of 22 effort at the line.
The Lopers led for the last 18 minutes of the game but never could pull ahead by more than five points. UNK made only one field goal over the last five minutes but sunk seven of eight free throws to keep the Eagles at bay.
Kruger made 12 of 16 free throws to become only the fourth player in school history to have made 300 free shots in a career. She is currently at an even 300. Sophomore Tayrn Ninemire, for the third time this year, tallied 20 points in a game, one shy of her career high. She also had a team-best six assists and is now tied with Kara Graham for the second most made threes in a career (117). Freshman Kalee Modlin had 10 of her 12 points in the first half while freshman Nicole Gruntorad had 10 points off the bench.
Marie Worsham (21 pts.) and Lindsay Erwin (17 pts.) led the Eagles (8-9, 5-4 RMAC).
UNK begins a two week homestand next Friday when Colorado Christian comes to town.
