Ninemire Has Career Night
Kearney, NE - Sophomore Taryn Ninemire had a career-high 22 points and hit six threes to lead the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team to a 61-53 win at Colorado School of Mines Saturday night in Golden, Colo.
This marks the eighth straight year the Lopers (20-3, 15-0 RMAC) have won at least 20 games in a season. In addition, the victory makes Carol Russell the winningest first year head coach in school history, passing Joe Sanchez who won 19 games in his only year at UNK (1993-94). Finally, the 16-game win streak is the fourth longest in school history and three from the record.
Colorado Mines (4-19, 3-11 RMAC) took the air out of the ball and packed it in defensively to take a 28-24 halftime lead. Ninemire had four threes by intermission to keep UNK within striking distance.
An Emilee Gusso three gave the Lopers the lead for good, 33-30, three minutes into the second half but the 'Diggers never went way. UNK built an 11-point lead, 51-40, by the eight minute mark but Mines cut the lead to five, 54-49, after a Ashley Gronewoller bucket with 2:45 to go. Two Allison Kruger free throws put the lead back up to eight, 57-49, with 1:34 to play and Mines never got it under six the rest of the way.
UNK came out on top despite shooting a season low 32.8 percent from the field, including an 8 of 28 effort in the second half (28.6). The Lopers did make 7 of 19 three pointers and were 18 of 22 at the free throw line.
Kruger had 13 of her 17 points in the second half and was perfect at the line (7 for 7). Freshman Kalee Modlin added eight points and six rebounds while Anne Manning led the reserves with six points.
Junior Heather Steffen just missed tying the NCAA Division II record for consecutive threes made without a miss (11, Shelby Peterson, South Dakota, 1992). Coming into tonight, the West Point native had made all 10 treys she had attempted over the last three games.
Gronewoller made 9 of 10 shots to lead Mines with 18 points and seven rebounds.
UNK hits the road again next week with games at Fort Hays State and Regis.
