Basketball Faster than 'Runners

Streaks Stay Alive in Denver

Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams remained perfect in 2003 as the Lopers both won RMAC games Thursday night at Metro State. In one of the best match-ups of the Division II season, the 5th-ranked UNK men beat the 8th-ranked Roadrunners, 80-64, while the Loper women dominated the second half to defeat Metro, 73-60.

The Loper women's streak is almost as impressive as the men's 15-0, now at nine games. UNK (13-3, 8-0 RMAC) has a two game lead over Fort Hays State and Regis for the league lead. Metro dropped to 8-8 and 5-3 in the RMAC.

The UNK women struggled a bit more than the men, trailing Metro by two at the break, 33-31. UNK had 18 of its 22 turnovers in the first 20 minutes but managed to stay in the game thanks to the shooting touch of sophomore Taryn Ninemire. She made 4 of 6 three point shots to lead the Lopers with 12 points at the break.

The Lopers opened the second set on a 16-2 run that made the score 47-37 with just under 15 minutes to play. The 'Runners never made a serious run after that and the Loper lead just grew.

Junior Allison Kruger didn't miss a field goal in the second half (7 for 7) to finish with a game-high 20 points. Ninemire made two more threes to have 19 on the night while freshman sensation Kalee Modlin (18 points, eight boards) joined Kruger to dominate the lane.

UNK shot 52.9 percent from the floor and out rebounded Metro by 11, 36-25. Metro also shot just 36 percent after halftime. Metro was led by guard Natasha Matlock (14 points, seven steals).

Both UNK teams are at Chadron State tomorrow night.
