Threes Fall For Women's Basketball

Lopers Rout CCU in 15th Straight Win

Kearney, NE - The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team made 12 three pointers, one off the school record, in a 85-42 thumping of Colorado Christian Friday night in Lakewood, Colo. Just a few weeks ago in Kearney, UNK beat the Cougars, 87-44.

The game was decided very early as the Lopers (19-3, 14-0 RMAC) led by 37 points, 48-11, at the break. UNK went 7 of 15 from behind the three point line in the first half while CCU was just 4 of 25 from the field. It marked the seventh time this winter UNK has held an opponent to 17 points or less  in a half.

Sophomore Taryn Ninemire hit four threes en route to a game high 20 points while junior Heather Steffen (11 points, 10 rebounds) recorded her fourth double double of the year. Steffen also made both her three point shots, putting her streak to 10 straight without a miss (over three games). Before this stretch, she was 4 of 29 from downtown.

Senior Emilee Gusso hit three triples for a career-high nine points and freshman Nicole Gruntorad had 17 points and three bombs off the bench. Freshman Anne Manning, the RMAC shooting leader at 61.4 percent,  made 5 of 6 shots to tally 11 points.

CCU (9-13, 3-11 RMAC), staying back in a zone to contain the Loper post players, didn't see much of junior star Allison Kruger. The forward played only 10 minutes as her chronic foot problems having been acting up of late.

CCU didn't have a player in double figures.

The Loper team record for threes came against Nebraska Wesleyan in a December of 2000. The is the third time a team had made 12 treys in a game.

UNK travels to Golden, Colo., tomorrow to take on the Colorado Mines Orediggers.
