Lopers Defeat UCCS Mountain Lions
Kearney, NE - Thanks to two big second half scoring runs, the Nebraska-Kearney basketball teams continued their winning ways Friday night in Colorado Springs. The Loper women beat Colorado-Colorado Springs 82-63 while the 5th-ranked UNK men improved to 13-0 with a 96-80 decision over UCCS.
Winners of seven straight, the Loper women (11-3, 6-0 RMAC) were tied 32 all at the half but began the second half with a 17-2 run that broke things wide open. The men, who led by as many as 15 points in the first half, trailed 60-59 midway through the second half. UNK made sure it wouldn't lose in the "Lions Den" for the second straight time, going on a 22-3 run that quickly put UCCS away.
In the early game, all nine Loper women scored with four reaching double figures. Junior Allison Kruger, making all eight free throws she attempted, led the way with 18 points. She also tied her career-high in rebounds (12) and recorded her fourth double double of the year. Kruger was followed in the scoring column by freshman Kalee Modlin (16) and junior Heather Steffen (12 points, 10 rebounds).
The Lopers dominated the glass in the first half but cold shooting (32.4 percent) allowed the Lions to stay in the game. UCCS, paced by 14 points from guard B.J. McNeely, made 46 percent of its field over the first 20 minutes. The Lions (3-10, 2-4 RMAC) came into the game shooting only 30 percent on the year.
UNK heated up in the second half while limiting the Lions offensive opportunities. UNK also had a season-low 13 turnovers and out rebounded the Lions by nine. McNeely finished with 22 points to lead UCCS.
The Lopers play at Western State tomorrow night.
