Lopers Win Streak Reaches 17
Kearney, NE - Heather Steffen and Kalee Modlin recorded double doubles and Taryn Ninemire exploded for 14 points in a seven minute span to lead the Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team to a 79-58 victory over Fort Hays State Tuesday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kans.
UNK remains perfect in RMAC play (16-0) and it's 17-game win streak pushes its overall record to 21-3. The Lopers have also won nine straight over Hays (18-6, 11-5 RMAC) including three on the Tigers home court.
Steffen had 15 points and 15 rebounds, her fifth double double of the season, while Modlin added 21 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. It was her second double double of the year. The 15 boards are three off the school record (Julie Volquardson, 18, 1984-85 season). Hays' has become used to Steffen's board work as she had 16 rebounds against them last February in Kearney. The West Point native, who set the Loper single season rebounding record last winter (274/9.1 pg), is averaging 9.6 caroms over the last six contests.
On the perimeter, Ninemire finished with 20 points on five threes. She also had six assists. The Fairfield native had 14 of her points and three of her triples over the last seven minutes.
No team led by more than six points for the first 30 minutes of the contest. The Lopers, who led 36-30 at the break, went up 47-42 on a Nicole Grunotrad layup with 10:07 to go. That started an 18-4 run that put UNK ahead 63-49 at the 5:22 mark and then Lopers just poured it on after that, leading by as many as 25.
UNK held Hays to 33 percent shooting and forced 25 turnovers, including 15 in the second half. On the glass, the Lopers had a plus 12 advantage including 20 o-boards.
Hays was led by Jamie Heiman's 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Lopers head to Denver Saturday afternoon for a big game at Regis.
